On a recent appearance on the BBC Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs, famed designer Sir Jony Ive said this about his curiosity:
I was so curious, not in a gentle, passive way, but furiously curious. It drives me crazy if we just accept someone’s dogma.
I loved that, and immediately set about to capture the passage in print.
I produced the three-colour print using our etching press (for the bright Diarylide Yellow background), and our Golding Jobber No. 8 letterpress (for the type, in oil-based Van Son black and fluorescent red inks).
The body text is from a curious font of all-caps metal type that I acquired from a printer in Montreal ten years ago; the "furiously curious" is from an all-lower-case font of wood type I purchased from John Barrett in 2022.
The Fabriano paper—purchased from our neighbourhood art supply shop Blank Canvas—is a true joy to print on. It's 100% cotton rag paper, and has more in common with a living breathing thing that it does with a piece of photocopier paper.
Lisa greatly assisted in conceptualizing the layout; notably, the idea of a solid box for setting the type was hers.
I will ship these by Canada Post in a mailing tube, with tracking.
Here's a short video showing me printing the black body text.
